OUR TEAM
Making beautiful wine requires the perfect blend of passion, experience and dedication.
The evolution and success of Stella Bella is thanks to the local Pyvis and Waldon families. They recognised the potential and quality of southern Margaret River wines and shared a vision to create a grape growing and wine making team, with a gravel to glass approach. The small team who bring these wines to life is led by Chief Winemaker Jarrad Olsen and Viticulturist James Hayward.
Jarrad Olsen
Growing up in Margaret River on a small family-owned vineyard, Jarrad spent his free time helping in the vineyard and winery. After a brief spell studying Anthropology and Sociology, Jarrad moved back to Margaret River and at the age of 19, began working in wineries. From his very first vintage he fell in love with the ever-changing mix of art, science, creativity, and physicality required each and every day in the winery, especially during the vintage period. Winemaking quickly became his path and his passion.
In 2007, at 27 Jarrad took on a Winemaker role with Vasse Felix in Margaret River. He spent 7 years focusing on red wine production. In 2014 personal circumstances forced Jarrad to reprioritise his professional life, taking a part-time role for a further 4 years with a focus on all areas of the Vasse Felix winemaking operations.
In 2018, Jarrad joined the team at Stella Bella. At Stella Bella Jarrad is able to capture the elegance and power of Southern Margaret River fruit, with a primary focus on Chardonnay and Cabernet. When not deeply engrossed in classic Margaret River varieties, Jarrad can be found with the rest of the team creating interesting wines from varieties such as Tempranillo, Malbec and Sangiovese.
With his expertise and dedication, Chief Winemaker Jarrad has significantly enhanced the quality of Stella Bella wines, contributing to their continuous improvement year after year. Thanks to his invaluable contributions, Stella Bella has proudly secured its position among the Top 10 wineries in Australia, as recognised by The Real Review in 2023.
James Hayward
VITICULTURIST
Growing up on the east coast of Australia Jim began travelling the world with a hospitality management degree and chef qualifications in his back pocket, intent on following the surf and the snow. A passion for cooking gave Jim the ability to hone his skills as he travelled through Canada, Scotland, France and the UK, just to name a few.
Jim arrived in Margaret River in 2001 and fell for the outdoors lifestyle that the region offers and with that he turned his hand to vineyards. Adapting his knowledge for food flavours toward the intricacies of vineyard profiles and grape flavours, Jim found a new love in growing wine grapes.
Jim’s passion for viticulture stems from over 20 years’ experience growing grapes in the Margaret River Region. Joining Stella Bella in 2021 as the assistant Vineyard manager after 16 years working with a contract grower, managing numerous vineyards throughout the region in 2022 Jim took on the role of Viticulturist for Stella Bella.
When not nurturing the Stella Bella Vineyards to produce extraordinary fruit, you will find Jim hanging out with his family and friends or in the ocean, catching a wave…in true Margaret River style.
