News from the Vines - December 2016

Summer is one of the busiest times of year in the vineyard. Here is what this weeks to do list looks like…

  • Finish shoot thinning to open up the canopy and allow the sun to shine on the developing shoots and fruit, plus allow air flow through the canopy.
  • Lift the trellis wires to capture the rapidly growing shoots.
  • Remove leaves around the fruit zone in cabernet sauvignon… this is very important to decrease herbaceous characters in the wine.
  • Start irrigation as summer is finally here!
  • Monitor new plantings of cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay… current 97-98% strike rate.

Vintage 2017 is shaping up to be a very good one. Our beloved chardonnay had finished flowering and is looking lovely. Cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc and shiraz have just started flowering at our Gnarawary Road Vineyard.
