The estemmed Ray Jordan recently reviewed a lineup of our 2019 Chardonnays and was mightily impressed. We have packaged up a 6 pack of these wines for your convenience.

“I remember some years ago reading two newspaper accounts of the same cricket match: one in a trashy London tabloid and the other in a stuffier Fleet Street broadsheet. Same match, same day, different papers, wildly different writing styles . . . but same writer.

I was reminded of this when I recently tasted three chardonnays from Stella Bella. Same variety, same vintage, different vineyards, different wines . . . same winemaker.

It was a fascinating exercise to compare the three wines. Each was exceptional and highly individual, representing a different take on the variety and quite a different outcome. Just as my cricket writer had done years earlier.

Winemaker Luke Jolliffe has done a remarkable job in capturing the distinctive characters of the vineyards through a combination of winemaking, where the key decision is often when to intervene and when to let the thing take its course.

You must know your vineyards and you must have confidence in your winemaking to get it right. Despite the difference in the wines, the common thread is the palate balance, which Jolliffe works so hard to get right. And believe me, with these wines he has got it right.

96 POINTS - Luminosa Chardonnay 2019 ($70)
Comes from the top of the Boodjidup Valley. This really punches out some power. Whole bunch pressed to maintain fruit purity. Settled over night and transferred on lees to French oak barrels for natural fermentation. Battonage has contributed to the appealing textural mouth feel. The power is awesome, yet the winemaking has held the line to create an elegant precision. Distinctive grapefruit and lemon run with a little lemon curd all offset with a flinty minerality and touch of gun smoke. Wonderfully complex.

97 POINTS - Suckfizzle Chardonnay 2019 ($70)
Comes off the most southern vineyard in Margaret River. Gosh, this is a supremely well-crafted chardonnay, which captures the essence of this cooler Margaret River vintage. Savoury cashew and grapefruit merging on the nose. It’s captivating. Then the palate delivers its power with great finesse. Savoury and bone dry with a trace of struck match that helps shape and define the palate. Super wine.

93 POINTS - Otro Vino chardonnay 2019 ($26)
Here is a back-to-basics sort of wine. All wild fermented in older oak and then stirred. The aromas are engaging with grapefruit and lime zest complementing a slightly savoury element. The palate is tight and tense with the fine acid sustaining the long finish. A most interesting wine providing an alternative. Unfined and unfiltered.
